Broken Forms: European Modernism
Now through January 5
From Germany and France to Italy and Russia, artists such as Giacomo Balla, Marc Chagall,
Vasily Kandinsky, Franz Marc, Kazimir Malevich, Piet Mondrian, and Pablo Picasso pioneered
revolutionary approaches to art making. While some experimented with the concept of
fragmentation and simultaneity, choosing to deal with themes such as technological
development and the spectacle of the changing city, others sought to express subjective
emotions and inner psychological truths through their art. Masterpieces in this
exhibition include examples of Cubism, Cubo-Futurism, Expressionism, and other avant-garde
movements that are central to the Guggenheim’s collection. Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum 1071 Fifth Avenue (at 89th St). www.guggenheim.org.
The World of Khubilai Khan: Chinese Art in the Yuan Dynasty
September 28 - January 2
This exhibition will cover the period from 1215, the year of Khubilai's birth, to 1368, the year of the fall of the Yuan dynasty in China founded by Khubilai Khan, and will feature every art form, including paintings, sculpture, gold and silver, textiles, ceramics, lacquer, and other decorative arts, religious and secular. The exhibition will highlight new art forms and styles generated in China as a result of the unification of China under the Yuan dynasty and the massive influx of craftsmen from all over the vast Mongol empire—with reverberations in Italian art of the fourteenth century.

Doug + Mike Starn on the Roof: Big Bambú
Now through October 31 (weather permitting)

interlocking 30- and 40-foot-long fresh-cut bamboo poles, lashed together with 50
miles of nylon rope. It will continue to be constructed throughout the duration of
the exhibition. Visitors are able to experience Big Bambú from the Roof
Garden level, and to walk among a forest of bamboo poles that serves as the base
of the sculpture. Alternatively, small groups of visitors are able to walk along
the elevated interior network of pathways roughly 20 to 40 feet above the Roof Garden.
Tickets are required for the guided tours, and specific guidelines apply to those
interested in participating. Metropolitan Museum of Art 1000 Fifth Ave at 82nd St. www.metmuseum.org.
Matisse: Radical Invention, 1913–1917
Now through October 11
This exhibit moves beyond the surface of these paintings to examine their physical
production and the essential context of Matisse's studio practice. Through this
shift of focus, the exhibition reveals deep connections among these works and
demonstrates their critical role in the artist's development at this time. Matisse
himself acknowledged near the end of his life the significance of this period when
he identified two works—Bathers by a River (1909–10, 1913, 1916–17)
and The Moroccans (1915–16)—as among his most "pivotal." The importance of
this moment resides not only in the formal qualities of the paintings but also in the
physical nature of the pictures, each bearing the history of its manufacture. The
exhibition includes approximately 120 paintings, sculptures, drawings, and prints,
primarily from the years of 1913–17, in the first sustained examination devoted
to the work of this important period. Please be aware that gallery occupancy is limited.
Timed tickets are required and guarantee entrance to the exhibition at the time
designated on the ticket, and carry no extra charge. This ticket also permits you
access to all other Museum galleries, exhibitions, and films. A limited number of
timed-entry tickets will be available each day at the Museum on a first-come, first-served
basis. Museum of Modern Art 15 West 53rd St. www.MoMA.org.
Andy Warhol: The Last Decade
Now through September 12
Encompassing nearly fifty works, this exhibition reveals the artist’s vitality,
energy, and renewed spirit of experimentation. During this time Warhol produced more
works, in a considerable number of series and on a vastly larger scale, than at any
other point in his forty-year career. It was a decade of great artistic development
for him, during which a dramatic transformation of his style took place alongside the
introduction of new techniques. Warhol continued to expand upon his artistic and
business ventures with commissioned portraits, print series, television productions,
and fashion projects, but he also reengaged with painting. Brooklyn Museum of Art 200 Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn www.brooklynmuseum.org.

Das Rheingold opens Metropolitan Opera Season
September 27 Opening Night
Two unparalleled artists join forces to create a groundbreaking new Ring for the Met: Maestro James Levine and director Robert Lepage. “The Ring is not just a story or a series of operas, it’s a cosmos,” says Lepage (La Damnation de Faust), who brings cutting-edge technology and his own visionary imagination to the world’s greatest theatrical journey. Bryn Terfel, singing his first, much-anticipated Met Wotan, leads the cast in Das Rheingold, the Ring’s first installment. Levine, who has conducted every complete cycle of Wagner’s masterpiece performed by the Met since 1989, says, “The Ring is one of those works of art that you think you know, but every time you return to it, you find all kinds of brilliant moments that hadn’t struck you with the same force before.” Metropolitan Opera, Lincoln Center.
