History:
When it opened in 1897, the Brooklyn Museum was originally designed to part of a series of beaux-arts pavillions representing an encyclopedia of human culture. Only one quadrant was completed. Today the museum is the second-largest art museum in New York City and one of the largest in the country. Its world-renowned permanent collections include more than one million objects, from ancient Egyptian masterpieces to contemporary art, and represent a wide range of cultures.

Advisory:
Allow a minimum of 2˝ to 3 hours (including travel time to and from midtown). Museum entrances are wheelchair accessible. Complimentary wheelchairs may be borrowed at the Coat Check on the first floor. Wheelchair-accessible rest rooms are located on the first and third floors. Wheelchair lifts have been installed on the third floor in the gallery of ancient Middle Eastern art. Please note that due to weight limits, motorized wheelchairs may only reach the third-floor galleries through the Schapiro wing. With advance notice, the Museum offers guided gallery visits to children and adults with developmental disabilities.
