Bronx Zoo Spring/Summer hours and rates are in effect April 5th through October 26th. History: When it opened in 1899, the Bronx Zoo was a leader in animal management thanks to its thoughtfully constructed simulations of the native habitats of its myriad denizens. Today 265 acres of wooded parkland house more than 6,000 animals, including some of nature's rarest species: Asian elephants, Chinese alligators and snow leopards among them. Within the zoo are endless subsections such as Jungle World (which replicates a tropical rainforest) and the World of Darkness (which gives visitors a glimpse into the nightlife of bats and naked mole-rats). For family fun, the Children's Zoo features interactive exhibits which let kids climb up a spider's web or crawl through a prairie dog tunnel. As for the famed Congo Gorilla Forest, that 6.5-acre recreation of an African rainforest is inhabited by mandrills, red river hogs, DeBrazza monkeys and, of course, gorillas. World of Reptiles, World of Birds, Monkey House, Baboon Reserve, Bison Range, Tiger Mountain and African Plains are other popular sections of this family-friendly menagerie.
