History:
After Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney’s collection of nearly 500 objects of 20th century American art was rejected by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1929, Whitney established her own museum in 1930. The Whitney became the first museum devoted to American art of the twentieth century. Today, the Whitney houses what many critics consider the largest and most comprehensive collection of its kind. It has unrivaled holdings by such artists as Alexander Calder, Edward Hopper, and Reginald Marsh, as well as many examples of Stuart Davis, Jasper Johns, Georgia O’Keeffe, John Sloan, and Frank Stella.
